Malta’s Passport Among the Most Powerful in the World – 5th Place

The latest Passport Index has elevated the Maltese Passport to one of the world’s most influential passports, marking a significant climb of three places from the previous year, now securing the fifth position. Data for this report is sourced from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA).

Rankings are determined by the number of countries that passport holders can access without a visa. This prestigious standing reflects the Maltese passport’s superiority over larger nations like Australia, Canada, and the United States of America. With visa-free access or visa on arrival granted to 190 countries, the Maltese Passport falls just four countries short of the most dominant passport globally. These destinations encompass Australia, various countries in Central and Eastern Europe, African nations, and nearly all countries in the Americas.

This year’s ranking marks the highest achievement for the Maltese passport. From a previous 15th spot in 2010, it consistently held the 7th position from 2018 to 2022. Notably, European Union member states dominate this year’s rankings, while the Afghan passport remains at the bottom, with access to only 28 countries without a visa, ranking at 104th place.
